Screwtape Letters – Week #5

Hi! This is Sue Shetler. Nita is at a conference and will return next week.

How is it going for you, reading The Screwtape Letters? Are four chapters a week a good amount to read? Are you reading along, but just not commenting in the blog? We’d like to hear from you to know what your response is to Nita’s Book Club. Would you take 5 minutes to let us know what you’re thinking? You can email either Nita or me or simply comment in the blog. Thanks in advance for your input!

Questions for Chapters 17 - 20

1. Chapter 17 talks about a kind of gluttony in which the amount of food eaten is not the issue. What is the heart of the issue?

2. According to Satan, when is a marriage no longer binding (Chapter 18)?

3. Can Satan understand love? How does Wormwood perceive what happened between Satan and God (Chapter 19)?

4. Desire is a gift from God that enables us to seek the good; it is also a tool that Satan can use to destroy our lives. How do we keep our desires in the right place (Chapter 20)?

    Hi,
I would love to provide a little feedback. I was pretty excited about a book club thinking that it would provide the opportunity to read and then interact with other Christians. I've been surprised at the lack of comments by individuals and therefore the lack of interaction or interactive comments. For those who currently reside at Bethany, they probably don't have as much need for that interaction but for those of us outside of Bethany, interacting with other Christians in an on-line format sounded like a great opportunity.

Screwtape Letters is proving to be a tough read for me. At the end of the day, reading it requires a lot of thinking to continually remind myself who the writer is. It is not, for me, a particularly uplifting book although it is a good reminder regarding the deceptiveness of the enemy. While I think it contains valuable insight, it won't go down as one of my favorite books, although I do plan on finishing it.

There is a little bit of feedback I could give regarding the structure of the club. I like reading Nita's comments and questions, but I think it would be more helpful to have those after the reading rather than prior to the reading. This would allow for all participants to read with fresh eyes and then share their insights/questions with each other. Nita's insights/questions could be more beneficial in bringing together the observations of other participants after the reading.

    Thanks!

I agree with Anonymous' comments and I like the idea to have Nita share her thoughts after others have conversed. While STL's seems to focus on the enemy's tactics, Nita has a way of bringing out God's personality and love for us. That's what encourages me.

I think it will take a while for a good number to join the club and to feel comfortable sharing their thoughts.

I want to continue doing this because I think it will help me grow spiritually - to be reading good, Christian books with others. I hope others join in!

  3. Great to get comments from some of you! Thanks for your input, and thanks to Sue who is ably filling in...

I'm particularly grateful for the comments from the anonymous writer who shared honestly about the struggles with Screwtape Letters. After starting with it, I too questioned whether it had been the best choice to start this venture with. I chose it because it is such a unique way of unveiling the heart of God and the high regard and deep affection He has for humans.

Concerning my giving input after the questions, that's what I have attempted to do. The input I give is about the previous week's reading, not on the current week.

Having said that, it may be too confusing, so we can try another method and see if it works better.

Thanks for your patience as I experiment with a new venture. It's good to walk through this with you. The Lord bless you richly!

Nita has a book in mind for next time, but it's not a definite yet. We'll let you know as soon as we know.

  7. Sue and I would like to get you all's thoughts in helping pick the next book out of the two that I have in mind:

    1. Life Together (by Dietrich Bonhoeffer) - this is a great book on Christian community. The author is contrasting true Christian community with human community and shows how healthy being together is contingent on getting alone with God, and healthy being alone with God is contingent on being with others. It's five chapters long.

    2. In the Name of Jesus (by Henri Nouwen) - this book takes the 3-fold temptation of Jesus in the wilderness and shows how it works out in our lives, showing how we are called to move from "relevance to prayer," from "popularity to ministry," and from "leading to being led." It has only three chapters.

If you have input on which you would like to do next, please respond by next Wednesday, July 12, so we can announce which one we will go with, ok?

Thank you and the Lord bless you!

I would like to read _In the Name of Jesus_. The topics appeal to me and I've never read this book (but have read _Life Together_).

I'm no longer going to be anonymous - I'm easing into this. I haven't read either book nor am I familiar with the authors so I am open to majority rules.

    Hi Nita and Susan,
I am putting my vote in for the Bonhoeffer book because it sounds like it addresses many issues we as a church body are working out and ones my husband and I hash over consistently. But I love Henri Nouwen and would like to read this one of his too sometime.
